Guarding Your Heart: A Valentine's Day Message for Christian Singles

Guarding Your Heart: A Valentine's Day Message for Christian Singles

As Valentine's Day approaches, the world seems to be filled with images of love and romance. If you wade through all hearts and roses, you'll see how critical it is for Christian singles to remember the importance of guarding their hearts, both from sin and in relationships. In my 39 years I have learned a little something something. I want to share bit of wisdom that I hope helps you in your Christian walk.

The Bible tells us in Proverbs 4:23 (ESV), "Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life." Our hearts are precious and vulnerable, capable of being swayed by emotions and desires. Guarding our hearts means being intentional about what we allow to influence us, especially in matters of love and relationships.

It's super easy to be swept up in the allure of romantic love without considering the consequences. However, God calls us to approach relationships with wisdom and discernment. Proverbs 31:30 (ESV) reminds us, "Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised." True beauty and worth come from a heart that is devoted to God and seeks His will above all else.

Guarding your heart also means being selective about the relationships you cultivate. Proverbs 13:20 (ESV) warns, "Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm." Make sure you are surrounding yourself with people who will encourage and uplift you in your walk with God, rather than leading you astray. Yes, he's fine - but does he love God? Sure they are at church every Sunday - but do they respect others? Yess, he's rich - does he have similar goals? Does having a relationship with this person draw you nearer or farther away from God? Ask yourself these questions. Even better, make a list to make it easier on yourself. If the answers are negative - move on - guard your heart.

Above all, draw close to God and seek His wisdom in EVERY area of your life, including your relationships. James 1:5 (ESV) promises, "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him." When you prioritize your relationship with God and seek His guidance, He will lead you on the path of righteousness and protect your heart from harm.

So, as you celebrate Valentine's Day this year, remember the importance of guarding your heart. I know this message is really written toward Christian women, but can totally apply to men as well. Share this message Christian singles in your life, encouraging them to seek God's wisdom and protection in matters of love and relationships. I pray that we all strive to honor God with our hearts and live according to His perfect plan. HAPPY VALENTINES DAY
